Tony Romo Accepts Backup Roll, While Hinting at a Dallas Departure

Yesterday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo spoke to the media for the first time

since injuring his back in preseason. He had a prepared statement that lasted about five minutes and left without taking any questions from the sea of reporters in front of him. He started by addressing the frustrations and guilt surrounding his recent injury, but admits he’s learned a lot about himself over the last year.

It’s in this moment that you find out who you really are and what you’re really about. You see football is a meritocracy; you aren’t handed anything, you earn everything, every single day. Over and over again you have to prove it. That’s the what the NFL and football are about. A great example of that is Dak Prescott and what he’s done. He’s earned the right to be our quarterback. As hard as that is for me to say, he’s earned that right.

Romo continues by praising the young rookie sensation, while stating he’ll have his back through every remaining moment of the season. However, his closing words seem to hint at a possible Dallas departure. “I think you all know something magical is happening to our team. I’m not going to allow this situation to negatively effect Dak or this football team by becoming a constant distraction.” Romo added “If you think for a second that I don’t want to be out there, then you’ve probably never felt the pure ecstasy of competing and winning. That hasn’t left me. In fact, it may burn now more than ever… I still want to play and compete.”

So it seems as if Romo has accepted that his time in Dallas is coming to an end, but the next question isn’t about retirement, it’s about where Tony will land next season.
