Stockholm-based Acne Studios has opened up its largest flagship yet, setting up shop on
the corner of Madison Avenue and E 74th Street in New York City. Located one block from the iconic Met Breuer building, the location is not only Acne’s largest to date, but also its first to employ gold as its signature tone — electrostatically gilded metal walls and aluminum fittings decorate the entirety of the interior. Along with the golden look is a black asphalt floor and structural pillars that are dotted with semi-precious stones to further push the opulent aesthetic. Better yet, longtime collaborator Max Lamb filled the space — which he also designed — with specially crafted bronze desks, benches and stools, not to mention custom hand-dyed rugs that were tufted by Kasthall in Sweden. Finally, a full lighting surface makes up the entirety of the ceiling to offer homogeneous lighting throughout the space.
Said creative director Jonny Johansson of the store:
For me, it was important to elevate the store design into something spectacular since the location demands it in a way. And, therefore, I went for gold. Classic, but still in the universe of Acne Studios, it’s like a local store on a global stage.
